Iowa high school boys’ state golf results: Solon takes second to repeat champion Gilbert in 3A
Spartans earn second-straight runner-up finish

For the second straight season, Solon matched the school’s best boys’ golf performance.
The Spartans will have more state hardware to show for it as well.
Solon placed second at the Class 3A state golf tournament Tuesday at Veenker Memorial Golf Course, producing consecutive runner-up finishes and the school’s third overall. The Spartans shot 328 for the second round, recording a total of 654 and finishing behind repeat champion Gilbert, which ended with 633.

Frank Haege Jr. and Isaiah Zoske earned top-10 finishes for the Spartans. Haege, a junior, followed a first-round 75 with a 78 Tuesday for a total of 153. Zoske, a freshman, shot 79 on Day 2 and capped his meet with a 161.
Waverly-Shell Rock senior Hogan Hansen won the title with a 5-under 139 over the two-day event. Pella’s Wil Simpson was second with 149.
Sophomore Roman Roth, of Washington (Iowa) tied for seventh with 160.
Dyersville Beckman boasted a runner-up finish in the team and individual standings of the Class 2A meet at Coldwater Links in Ames. The Trailblazers shared the lead after Day 1 and recorded a 320 for the second round, giving them a 629. State champion Hudson shot 310 Tuesday for a 619 total.
Beckman sophomore Luke Harwick claimed runner-up medalist honors, shooting 75 for the second round and capping the tournament with 146. He missed giving the Trailblazers back-to-back state champions by one stroke. Ida Grove OABCIG’s Axton Miller won the crown. Beckman’s Nate Offerman, the 2021 titlist, placed 16th.
Brady Bockenstedt and Ty Rausch rounded out the Trailblazers’ score, posting an 83 and 85, respectively, for Day 2.
Iowa City Regina’s Mikey Takacs fired a 74 Tuesday, giving him 149 total. He tied for fifth overall.
West Branch secured its third straight top-three finish. The Bears were 2A champions last season and runners-up in 2019. They placed third, just one stroke back of Beckman.
In Class 1A, East Buchanan earned a runner-up finish and the school’s best since winning the 2017 team title. The Buccaneers posted a team total of 689, placing 16 shots back of champion Lake Mills at Ames Golf and Country Club.
East Buchanan was paced by junior Ben Hesner, who fired rounds of 88 and 74 for a two-day total of 162. Teammate Hayden Nelson shot 169 to finish in 10th. Aidan Cook and Keaton Kelly rounded out the second-round scores, shooting 83 and 89, respectively, Tuesday.
English Valleys placed fifth with a 727.
