VINTON - Although it started dark and stormy, the skies cleared for the Cedar Rapids Xavier Saints Friday night.
Already in possession of a playoff spot, the Saints downed the Vinton-Shellsburg Vikings, 38-0, to lock up the Class 3A, District 3 title. The win extends the Saints' regular-season winning streak to 26 games.
'All the credit goes to the coaches and the scout team that does the dirty work behind the scenes,” said Saints quarterback Quinn Schulte, who finished with 118 yards on the ground. 'They never get the credit.”
The Saints wasted no time on their march to the district title. Schulte blasted through the line and sprinted 85 yards for the opening score. A bad snap on a Vinton-Shellsburg punt set the Saints up at the 3-yard line. Jax Junge scored untouched on the first play, and the Saints led 14-0.
'We just tried to come out and be tough,” Schulte said. 'Vinton gave us a tough look at first, but our scout team did a good job preparing us this week.”
The Vikings found a little success through the air against the Saints defense. Blake Bohnsack spread the ball out, connecting with five different receivers for 51 yards in the first half. The Saints clamped down when needed and kept the Vikings out of the end zone.
'Bohnsack is pretty good, he's tough to stop,” Saints linebacker McClain Burger said.
Ben Conrad connected on his seventh field goal of the year to put Xavier up 17-0. Schulte struck through the air just before halftime, hitting Gabe Lux on a 15-yard touchdown.
With just two minutes gone in the third quarter, Junge and Schulte scored rushing touchdowns.
'It's a cliché, but our goal is just to get better each and every play and every game and see where it takes us,” Saints Coach Duane Schulte said.
