CORALVILLE — Cedar Rapids Washington’s Jane Petersen has a high bar set for herself.
She is just a freshman, but she has the ability to balance humility with talent and a hunger to be the best. Like many athletes, her sights are set on an example set by an older sibling.
“I think having an older brother helps push me because I want to be at the level he was,” Petersen said of her brother, Nile, the 2019 Class 4A state runner-up for the Warriors. “Knowing he was in my family, I do want to push myself. He really encourages me. He has helped a lot.”
Petersen demonstrated how capable she is as a competitor, capturing medalist honors at the Mississippi Valley Conference Super Meet on Monday at Brown Deer Golf Course. She fired a 2-over 73, topping fellow freshman Morgan Rupp of Linn-Mar by two strokes.
“I just stayed really focused during the round,” Petersen said. “I was making putts. I was just out there playing my game.”

Washington Coach Dennis Goettel recognized Petersen’s potential before she officially joined the program. As an eighth grader, she was scoring better than many varsity golfers. Goettel knew they were adding a special player.
“She played a lot of qualifying rounds on the course and her average was our best average,” Goettel said. “We couldn’t wait to get her in the lineup.”
The last week was indicative of Petersen’s drive to always be better. After a round last week at Hunters Ridge, she expressed her frustration with small parts of the round, vowing to improve the next time. In one of the biggest regular season events, she did produce one of her strongest rounds.
“She was pretty steady all day long,” Goettel said. “She stayed out of trouble, which you have to do on this golf course. She’s just a good, steady player and that paid off here.”
Petersen placed first for the second straight event, winning a conference quadrangular last week. She also posted her second-lowest 18-hole score of the season, carding four birdies and coming in under par on consecutive holes – Nos. 18 and 1.
“I think focusing on the next shot really helps me and knowing that it’s the next shot that matters and not the shots before,” Petersen said. “This is not normal for me, at all. I play consistent golf, but I don’t make birdies like I did today. It was crazy being out there.
“I was making up-and-downs to save pars. I was putting really, really well.”
Petersen said she entered this season with a notion she could compete with anyone, regardless of grade. She also respected the upperclassmen, who were already experienced and accomplished. The victory will also push her to an even higher level.
“Knowing that I can play like this, I’m going to hold myself to a much higher expectation than I was,” Petersen said. “I also have to remember that playing my normal golf is completely fine.
“I think I’m going to go work, because there are still improvements needed. I made some bad shots today, but it was the comeback that saved me.”
Youth was prevalent among the leaders. Rupp was second overall with 75, helping Linn-Mar finish second with a 352 and five shots back of champion Cedar Falls. Rupp carded one birdie each on the front and back. The Lions’ Ava Kline shot 91, while Nina and Gabby Mercure added 92 and 94, respectively, for the Lions.
Iowa City Liberty sophomore Bella Pettersen placed third. She fired 76 on her home course. Pettersen was the MVC Mississippi Player of the Year and finished third at the 2021 4A state meet.
