Iowa Weather For Monday, March 23, 2020

Today’s weather is going to kick off a wet and overcast week. Expect patches of fog until 10am, otherwise it’ll be cloudy, with a high near 47 Tonight it’ll remain mostly cloudy with a low of 38.

There’s a good chance of rain every day this week with temperatures ranging from the high 30s 50 mid 50s. The good news is, we should be spending as much time as possible inside, so I guess it all works out in the end.

New Gazette Features

Speaking of social distancing, we’re introducing some new features at The Gazette to adapt to these crazy times and better serve our community.

Starting today, we’re launching our revamped community page with a focus on innovative ways people are managing in times of social distancing. This page will also help highlight online concerts and other digital events.

On Wednesday we’re launching Kids Gazette. This will feature in our Monday, Wednesday, and Friday papers and includes opportunities for young readers to have fun and also highlights stories from kids in our community. We’ve also donated part of our PennySaver to help school districts deliver learning materials to kids.

Sundays are getting a new 3-page section called Leisure, featuring a collection of stories about hobbies, crafting and recreational activities.

We’d love your feedback on these new sections, and you can also participate in our reporting at thegazette.com/helpreport. Currently we’re seeking parents dealing with day care questions or concerns, gym members finding ways to keep active, artists finding ways to remain inspired.

Iowa Coronavirus Updates

There were some other major coronavirus developments over the weekend. As the national testing platform continues to roll out, we can expect positive cases of coronavirus to increase, and we’re seeing that here in Iowa as cases have doubled since Friday to 90, including 4 cases now reported in Linn county.

In response to the increase, Governor Kim Reynolds ordered the closures of salons, medical spas, barbershops, tattoo parlors, tanning facilities, massage therapy establishments and swimming pools, but is not yet ordering a mandatory shelter-in-place command.

University of Iowa hospitals is rewarding over 11,000 “clinical and support” employees with $300 lump sum payments as a thanks for their efforts fighting coronavirus.

Starting today, Hy-Vee is launching a fundraising campaign to help food banks across its eight-state market restock their shelves.
