Former Iowa men’s basketball player Joe Wieskamp was placed on waivers by the San Antonio Spurs Monday.
Muscatine’s Wieskamp was a second-round draft pick of the Spurs in 2021 after leaving Iowa following his junior season. He began the season on a two-way contract, and was converted to a standard NBA contract in March.
He signed a two-year contract this summer with the first year guaranteed. So he’ll be paid $2.175 million by San Antonio unless he is claimed on waivers.

Wieskamp averaged 17.1 points in 15 games last season for San Antonio’s Austin Spurs NBA G League affiliate. He played in 29 games with San Antonio, averaging 2.1 points in 7.1 minutes per game.
He scored a career-high 13 points in 12 minutes last Jan. 4 against the Toronto Raptors.
Wieskamp averaged 2.0 points and 9.7 minutes in three preseason appearances for the Spurs, making 2 of 14 field goal tries.
At 23, Wieskamp is older than nine players on the Spurs’ roster, including five 19-year-olds.
Elsewhere, former Hawkeye forward Tyler Cook appears set to start this season with the G League’s Salt Lake City Spurs.
Cook enters his fourth professional season. He has played for five NBA teams in a total of 65 games, including 20 last season with the Chicago Bulls. He averaged 17.2 points last season in 17 games with the G League’s Windy City Bulls.
The Utah Jazz signed Cook last week, then waived him so they could place him on Salt Lake City’s roster if Cook wasn’t claimed on waivers by an NBA team.
