As Valentine's Day approaches, I think of the Valentine's card I came across in my mom's drawer recently. Pristine with no creases nor frayed corners, it was a treasure of hers. It has a big red heart surrounded by bunches of pretty flowers and even more little hearts. Across it says, "For You Sis." It was sent by her brother, my uncle, the Rev. Canon Dominic Loferski. Feb. 10 is the anniversary of his death in 1979. He embodied what an uncle is - someone you can't wait to see and love dearly.

For me, Iowa is Cedar Rapids and the

parishioners of St. John's Episcopal Church. Some from memory. Others from emails. Last year, Dave Erbeck phoned, reminiscing being an acolyte and even debuting in Christmas 1950 as the youngest choir member. To this day he is still singing in choirs. dominicloferski@aol.com
