Team of Dreams returning to Field of Dreams over Labor Day Weekend

DYERSVILLE — The world of sports and film will merge on the Field of Dreams over Labor Day weekend, and the public has several ways to play ball with it all.

The first pitch is Aug. 31, with a movie night at the Phoenix Theatres in Dubuque’s Kennedy Mall. For $20, ticket holders can choose from “The Sandlot,” “A League of Their Own” and “Field of Dreams.”

Other options include $40 for a ticket to “The Sandlot” or “A League of Their Own,” and a Q&A with cast members; $40 for an autographed poster signed by “League” cast members Ann Cusack (Shirley Baker), Lori Petty (Kit Keller) and Megan Cavanagh (Marla Hooch) or “Sandlot” actors Victor Dimattia (Timmy), Tom Guiry (Smalls), Brandon Adams (Kenny DeNunz), Shane Obedzinski (Tommy), Marty York (Yeah-Yeah) and Chauncey Leopardi (Squints).

VIP tickets are $60 for food, music, cash bar and mingling with your choice of “The Sandlot” of “A League of Their Own” cast members; Q&A and movie tickets are sold separately.

The action stays in Dubuque the morning of Sept. 1, with Breakfast with the Pros Q&A from 8:30 to 11 a.m. at the Hotel Julien Dubuque. Sports legends will share their favorite moments on and off the field. Ozzie Smith, Reggie Jackson, Andre Dawson and Rickey Henderson will speak from 9 to 9:45 a.m., and David Ross, Joe Girardi, Edgar Martinez and Jim Edmonds will speak from 10 to 10:45 a.m. Cost is $55.

The bases will be loaded from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. for Team of Dreams day at the Field of Dreams movie site near Dyersville.

A silent auction runs from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Among the items up for bidding are autographed ball gloves, baseballs, football helmets, baseball jerseys, batting helmets, baseball bats, as well as prints, movie posters, photos and more. For details, go to Teamofdreamsiowa.com/silent-auction/

Next up is an autograph session from 1 to 5 p.m. From 3 to 4 p.m., Steve Carlton and Wade Boggs will share their favorite moments from the game on and off the field.

Opening ceremonies begin at 6 p.m., before a friendly game of softball between guest players and the movie site’s Ghost Players.

The event rounds home base at 8:45 p.m. with a screening in the outfield of the movie that started it all 30 years ago — “Field of Dreams.”
