CEDAR RAPIDS — Orchestra Iowa will be blasting audiences to infinity and beyond during the 2019-20 season, with an elemental exploration of the heavens and earth, as well as the music of Queen.

The season blasts off with Brucemorchestra XII on Sept. 14. Under a starlit sky on the front lawn at Brucemore mansion, thousands will hear Gustav Holst’s “The Planets”; music from the “Star Trek” franchise; and a tribute to the 50th anniversary of the NASA moon landing, with “From Earth to the Moon and Beyond,” a piece co-commissioned by Orchestra Iowa from composer James Beckel.

The first Masterworks concert floats back to earth Oct. 18 and 19, via “Reflections on the Mississippi,” by Cedar Rapids native and Grammy-winning composer Michael Daugherty.

That’s followed by a trip over the rainbow as Orchestra Iowa becomes the live soundtrack to the classic film “The Wizard of Oz,” on Oct. 25 and 26.

Then get ready to fire up 250 candles, as the orchestra celebrates the 250th birthday of the person Maestro Timothy Hankewich deemed “arguably the greatest composer of the space-time continuum,” Beethoven. To honor his genius, the orchestra will perform his Symphony No. 7 on Jan. 31 and Feb. 1, as well as his First Symphony on April 4, 2020, in a concert that also features Mozart’s “Requiem.”

The Pops season features some blistering holiday blues from the awarding guitarist Kevin “B.F.” Burt from Dec. 20 to 22; “Magical Music from the Movies,” rocketing through memorable melodies from such Disney’s animated classics as “Frozen,” “Beauty & the Beast” and “Mary Poppins” on Feb. 22; ending with a blast from the past as the Jean N’ Classics band teams up with Orchestra Iowa to perform the music of Queen on May 16.
