Sunday marked the third time in eight days that no deaths in Iowa as a result of COVID-19 were reported in a 24-hour period - the first time that low has been reached since the state saw its first coronavirus deaths in late March.
After the state reported it first virus death, no more were reported over the next three days. To date, 721 Iowans have died from COVID-19.
Iowa reported 320 new cases of the coronavirus in the 24-hour period ending at 11 a.m. Sunday, or 7.66 percent of the 4,180 total test results. That brought the statewide total above 31,000 positive cases since the state's first reported cases March 8.
The number of new daily cases fell below Iowa's rolling seven-day average, which as of Sunday sat at an average of 402 new cases daily.
The rolling seven-day average is the average number of positive coronavirus tests in a county or state over the past seven days, updated by The Gazette every day with the new data.
Johnson County passed Linn County in the number of new cases reported in the past 24 hours. Johnson County reported 27 new cases, bringing the county's total to 1,278. In Linn County, 15 new cases were reported, bringing the county's total to 1,270.
Johnson County now has the fifth-most positive COVID-19 cases of any county in Iowa, having also surpassed Dallas County, which reports 1,269 total cases.
Johnson County's rolling seven-day average has decreased for four consecutive days, but the county saw 19 consecutive days of double-digit increases before that.
Linn County reported 15 new positive COVID-19 cases Sunday, marking 15 days that the county's rolling seven-day rolling has reached double digits.
Hospitalizations statewide have increased - up from 134 Saturday to 141 Sunday. Patients in intensive care is up from 40 to 43 patients, but the number of people on ventilators remained the same at 16.
