I moved to Cedar Rapids in 1974 to attend Coe College and have made Cedar Rapids my home. Since this time I have witnessed our city go through many changes and tackle many challenges. Growing up in a family where community service was a part of life, I have a long track record of working alongside industry leaders, neighbors and elected officials, all trying to improve the city we live in.
Serving in the past on the City Council as commissioner of parks and recreation, with your help we were able to transform a sleepy park system into one of the most successful and progressive ones for a mid-sized city in the country. I am both thankful and proud of that experience.
As a community we are at a crossroads. Powered by an unprecedented level of planning, private investment and public funding, what were once blighted sections of our city have quickly become an urban destination for the Midwest. The excitement found in our city today is genuine and I am proud to be one of many people who have contributed to helping make this transformation happen.
At the same time our community faces social challenges that are complex. As a city we have had some difficulty dealing with these issues, but now they have become intertwined with gun violence and need a comprehensive strategy.
So while we celebrate our success from the floods, the question now becomes: 'Where do we go next? How do we build on our innovation and success?” From my experiences I have learned two simple things: how this city works and how to move it forward. With your help, we can. I ask for your support on Nov. 7.
