For the past 12 years it has been my honor to serve on the Cedar Rapids Community School District Board of Education.
As a district, we have had to overcome several obstacles this past year — the pandemic and the derecho. During the pandemic, our administration was able to put together a return to learn plan that provided instructional options to all our students and families.
The derecho impacted all of our buildings delaying the start of school, but through remote options and constant adjustments, we were able to provide instructional support to our students. By January 2021, all school doors were open! Equity, access and safety were our focus. There were challenges along the way, but we continually adjusted and remained flexible to educate our students. Our staff made incredible efforts and kept students at the center of their work.
Amid the aforementioned challenges, our district stayed committed to the Facility Master Plan. With input from our community, staff and administration, we were able to build a new and improved elementary school. West Willow opened its doors in August 2021.
In addition, we have some heavy lifts ahead us — addressing our equity and student achievement gaps, the facility work and continually developing innovative opportunities for all students to grow and thrive.
I strongly support our strategic plan as it provides us with a road map on how to move our district forward. The pronounced focus on equity and our vision of “Every Learner: Future Ready” has gained momentum, but there still is work to get done. I am willing to give the time and energy to complete the tasks at hand.
Our goal is to provide our students with an amazing educational experience and prepare them for life after graduation. Their education will determine their future.
