Spring football attendance figures for Saturday: There's the SEC, and there's almost everyone else

Apr. 15, 2012 3:19 pm
The story stays the same. Southeastern Conference fans are hotter for football than fans anywhere else.
Look at these announced attendance figures from the eight SEC teams that held their spring football games on Saturday:
Alabama 78,526

Georgia 44,117
Auburn 43,427
Florida 38,000
South Carolina 34,513
LSU 33,000
Missouri 18,614
Vanderbilt 8,500
The Big Ten didn't have much to report Saturday because a) Only seven of its 12 teams had their spring finales Saturday and b) Three of those were cancelled (Indiana, Nebraska, Purdue) because of inclement weather.
At Indiana and Purdue, that wouldn't have meant much, attendance-wise. But at Nebraska, it's a major disappointment. They routinely bring in fifty, sixty thousand fans at $10 a ticket for the spring game.
I couldn't find a crowd-count for Northwestern's spring game. And I looked. I'm guessing it wasn't large. That leaves us with:
Michigan 25,000
Iowa 15,000 (Cedar Rapids Gazette estimate)
Illinois 3,000
Minnesota, Ohio State and Penn State go this Saturday, Michigan State and Wisconsin on April 28.
Here are others who have played their spring games:
