Class 5A Iowa high school football RPIs, through Week 8

Prairie has clinched a playoff berth; Kennedy, Linn-Mar, City High have postseason destiny in their own hands

The Iowa High School Athletic Association has released Class 5A football RPI standings, through Week 8.

The 16-team 5A playoff field will be determined in two weeks solely by RPI, which is determined by three factors: W-L percentage (37.5 percent), opponents’ W-L percentage (37.5 percent) and opponents’ opponents’ W-L percentage (25 percent).

Here is how the top 20 teams stand through Week 8, with their Week 9 opponents and postseason scenarios:

1. West Des Moines Dowling (7-1, 45-27, 359-289, .7010); vs. Waukee. Clinched playoff berth and home field for two rounds.

2. Southeast Polk (7-1, 39-33, 373-275, ..6752); at Cedar Rapids Jefferson. Clinched playoff berth and home field for two rounds.

3. Pleasant Valley (8-0, 31-41, 355-293, .6734); vs. Iowa City West. Clinched playoff berth and home field for two rounds.

4. Ankeny (7-1, 38-34, 364-284, .6665); at Des Moines Lincoln. Clinched playoff berth and home field for first round. Clinches quarterfinal home field with a win.

5. Cedar Rapids Prairie (6-2, 42-30, 320-328, .6235); vs. Linn-Mar. Clinched playoff berth. Clinches first-round home field with a win.

9. Cedar Rapids Kennedy (6-2, 33-39, 332-316, .5812); vs. Dubuque Hempstead. Very likely playoff qualifier, but not mathematically in yet. Possible first-round home field with a win.

10. Linn-Mar (5-3, 41-31, 320-328, .5714); at Cedar Rapids Prairie. Clinches playoff berth with a win, likely to qualify with a loss. Possible first-round home field with a win.

11. Iowa City High (5-3, 40-32, 313-335, .5635); vs. Davenport Central. Clinches playoff berth with a win. Iffy with a loss. Long-shot at first-round home field with a win.

12. Waukee Northwest (4-4, 47-25, 337-311, .5623); vs. Urbandale. Clinches playoff berth with a win.

13. Sioux City East (6-2, 28-44, 346-302, .5606); at Sioux City West. Clinches playoff berth with a win.

14. Ankeny Centennial (4-4, 45-27, 330-318, .5492); vs. Des Moines East. Clinches playoff berth with a win.

15. Waukee (4-4, 42-30, 349-299, .5409); at West Des Moines Dowling. Probably clinches playoff berth with a win.

16. West Des Moines Valley (4-4, 42-30, 347-301, .5401); at Des Moines Roosevelt. Probably clinches playoff berth with a win.

18. Urbandale (5-3, 29-43, 360-288, .5243); at Waukee Northwest. Could qualify with a win and help.

19. Dubuque Senior (4-4, 39-33, 318-330, .5133); vs. Cedar Falls. Could qualify with a win and help.

20. Iowa City West (4-4, 33-39, 336-312, .4890); at Pleasant Valley. Unlikely to qualify, but still probably mathematically alive.
