A train derailment early Wednesday near Lansing in farm northeast Iowa caused coal to spill into the Mississippi River, the Iowa Department of Natural Resources reported.
The Canadian Pacific train derailed about 6:40 a.m. Wednesday 4 miles south of Lansing, near the Lansing Power Plant, a coal-fired plant owned by Alliant Energy.
Ten cars of coal went off the tracks, but only one tipped coal into the river, the DNR reported.
No other fuel or other products spilled.
Canadian Pacific staff worked on cleaning up the spill Wednesday. The DNR will monitor cleanup activities and consider appropriate enforcement action, the news release states.
