CEDAR RAPIDS - A jury found three Waterloo family members guilty last week in federal court for distributing cocaine and crack cocaine, following a five-day trial.
Alston Campbell, Sr., 64, and his two sons, Alston Campbell, Jr., 34, and William Campbell, 43, were convicted of conspiracy to distribute cocaine and crack cocaine. Alston Campbell, Sr. was also convicted of distributing crack cocaine and Alston Campbell, Jr. was also convicted of one count possession of cocaine with the intent to distribute.
William Campbell was also convicted of one count of distributing crack cocaine and one count of distributing cocaine.
The jury deliberated about six hours on Friday before returning a verdict.
Evidence at trial showed that the father and sons were working with others to distribute cocaine and crack cocaine in the Waterloo area. Both the DEA and FBI did multiple wiretaps on phones to collect evidence about the drug trafficking.
Law enforcement used the wiretap to determine that the Campbells and others were bringing pounds of cocaine into Iowa from out of state and then selling the cocaine as both powder and crack cocaine in Waterloo.
The three men remain in U.S. Marshal's custody pending sentencing, which hasn't been set at this time.
Alston Campbell, Sr. and William Campbell face a mandatory minimum sentence of 20 years and possibly up to life in prison.
Alston Campbell, Jr. faces a mandatory minimum sentence of 10 years and possibly up to life in prison.
The case was prosecuted by assistant U.S. attorneys, Emily K. Nydle and Richard Murphy, and was investigated by the Drug Enforcement Administration, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, the Iowa Division of Narcotics Enforcement, the Tri-County Drug Enforcement Task Force, the Waterloo, Cedar Rapids, Cedar Falls and Iowa City police departments, the Linn County and Black Hawk County sheriff's offices, and the Iowa State Patrol.
