Pedestrian, county deputy injured in high-speed pursuit starting in Oelwein and spanning several counties

A Buchanan County Deputy was injured after a high-speed chase that started when a vehicle struck a pedestrian in Oelwein Saturday afternoon.

According to a media release from the Buchanan County Sheriff's Office, a vehicle being driven by Keven Kraphl Jr., 29, of Manchester, allegedly struck a pedestrian at the intersection of Fifth Street and North Frederick in Oelwein. Kraphl then left the scene.

Roughly two minutes later, Kraphl was spotted by an Iowa DNR Conservation Officer just outside of Oelwein, and when the officer attempted to stop Kraphl he refused. A high-speed pursuit began from here, continuing through Fayette and Buchanan Counties until reaching the intersection of Buchanan/Delaware Road and 150th, when Kraphl collided with a deputy's vehicle that was attempting to stop him.

After the collision, Kraphl attempted to flee the scene on foot but was quickly apprehended by the Conservation officer.

The Buchanan County Deputy in the vehicle that was struck, identified as Daniel Walter, was flown to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City and was listed in serious condition.

According to the release, the pedestrian was scene and released at Mercy One Hospital in Oelwein. Deputy Walter is awake and alert at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, but is stipp being evaluated and care for at this time.

The incident is being investigated by the Iowa State Patrol.
