Just before 5 a.m. Monday, Duchess Cleaners, 3905 Center Point Road NE, nearly burned to the ground. Although the structure is currently standing, it is being considered a 'total loss” by fire officials.
According to a news release, crews with the Cedar Rapids Fire Department arrived to flames rising from the front of the business. Firefighters were able to extinguish the fire within an hour, but part of the roof collapsed and much of the building was destroyed by the blaze.
No one was in the building at the time.
Public Safety Spokesperson Greg Buelow said those who had clothing at the dry cleaners at the time of the fire, should contact the business owners. The owners, he said, have also been making efforts to contact their clients.
Duchess Cleaners, which, according to its website, has served the Cedar Rapids area more than 40 years, has a second location at 588 Boyson Road NE.
