IOWA CITY — A suspect is in Iowa City police custody after officers responded just before 10 a.m. Tuesday to reports of shots fired in a home near downtown and found a man suffering from gunshot wounds.
Investigators have shared few details about the 9:46 a.m. report of “multiple shots fired” at 402 Fairchild St. — which sits two blocks west of North Market Park in the historic North Side neighborhood and three blocks west of Mann Elementary.
Officers responding to the two-story home found the suspected shooter on the second floor, in addition to a man with multiple gunshot wounds, according to an Iowa City police news release. He’s been hospitalized and is being treated for non-life-threatening injuries.
Officers found a firearm and took the male suspect into custody, according to the department, which didn’t disclose the suspect’s name and reported “charges are pending.”
The suspect hasn’t yet been arrested because he too has been hospitalized — although the department hasn’t shared details of his injuries or condition.
“This was not an act of domestic violence,” according to department spokesman Lee Hermiston. “The shooter’s knowledge of the victim is part of the ongoing investigation.”
Officers, though, “do not believe there is an active public safety threat associated with this incident.”
