Two people mentioned that this story reminded them of the movie "Grumpy Old Men." I wonder if they've seen it?
CEDAR RAPIDS -- Snow shovels were used in two assaults in Cedar Rapids on Tuesday, and one of the assailants later punched a police officer in the face, police said.
Officers responded to 3701 Western Pine Dr. NE just after 3 p.m. when a disagreement between neighbors about where to put snow from the sidewalk turned ugly. According to the report, George D. Schulte, 64, struck Kenneth Hootman, 65, several times with a snow shovel, causing "visible injuries" to his arm.
When Officer Harvey Caldwell went to Schulte's door, Schulte told him to leave and punched him in the face, breaking his glasses, police said.
Schulte was charged with assault causing bodily injury and interference with official acts causing injury.
About 3 1/2 hours later, officers were called to another incident involving a snow shovel. Mitchell B. Followell, 40, tried to hit Michelle Buchanan, 62, in the face with a shovel in the 3100 block of First Avenue SE, according to a criminal complaint.
Police Sgt. Cristy Hamblin said Buchanan arrived home, saw Followell, who had permission to stay in her garage, and drove away because he was upset with her. Followell followed her and swung the shovel at her car, police said.
Buchanan drove away and reported the incident to police. When officers found Followell, he was intoxicated and was carrying the shovel, according to the police report. As he was being arrested, he became verbally abusive and tried to bite and kick officers, police said.
Followell was charged with assault, interference with official acts and public intoxication.
Both Schulte and Followell were taken to the Linn County Jail and were released after making initial court appearances Wednesday morning. Schulte had a court date set, and Followell was fined. It was Followell's second public intoxication charge in six days and his 10th since 2008.
