CEDAR RAPIDS - A 25-year-old Cedar Rapids man, while pending sentencing on a burglary and theft conviction, was arrested Sunday in connection with a hit-and-run accident that seriously injured a woman earlier this month and a series of burglaries committed shortly before the crash.
Cardel D. Redmond, 25, is charged with first-degree theft, three counts of third-degree burglary, and multiple traffic offenses in the crash. He was taken into custody around 10 p.m. Sunday in Cedar Rapids.
Redmond is accused of driving a stolen truck just before 7 a.m. Nov. 9 when he crossed the centerline of 33rd Avenue SW near 18th Street SW and hit a minivan head-on being driven by Haley Wiebel, 34. The woman needed to be extricated from the van, but Redmond was able to flee the scene.
Redmond is accused of stealing a truck from Cancun Mexican Grill & Bar, 365 33rd Ave., sometime between 1 a.m. and 3 a.m. that morning. Investigators say Redmond broke into the restaurant and damaged several pieces of equipment including the cash register and jukebox and took the truck keys.
Redmond was captured on security video stealing the pickup truck belonging to the owner that was parked in front of the restaurant, the complaint shows. The defendant then used the stolen truck as transportation as he committed successive burglaries to AT&T at 1950 Blairs Ferry Road, Hiawatha, and 4701 First Avenue SE, in Cedar Rapids. A short time later, he was involved in the hit and run collision while driving the stolen vehicle, the complaint states.
On Nov. 2, Redmond pleaded in Linn County District Court to third-degree burglary and second-degree theft and was to be sentenced next month but a presentencing report couldn't be completed because probation officers couldn't reach him by phone or locate him at his residence, according to court documents. He was convicted for using a crow bar Aug. 25 to break into a Piercing Pagoda kiosk at Lindale Mall, 4444 First Avenue N.E., and stealing about $13,000 worth of jewelry.
Redmond then tried to escape the area on a city bus but officers stopped him and found the jewelry, a crow bar, marijuana and a set of scales in his possession.
Redmond was already on two years probation in another burglary case when he stole the jewelry, court documents show.
