Extreme cold causes cancellations for Eastern Iowa schools, events

Extremely low temperatures are predicted in the Corridor this week, and it is already causing cancellations and delays.

A winter storm dropped 2 to 6 inches of snow across Eastern Iowa overnight Sunday, and temperatures are predicted to be at least 40 degrees below normal this week for the Cedar Rapids area, according to the National Weather Service.

A wind chill watch is in effect from 3 p.m. Tuesday till Thursday morning with wind chills between -40 and -50 degrees - the coldest possibly Tuesday night through Wednesday morning with chills as low as -55.

University of Iowa: Canceling classes from 5 p.m. Tuesday through noon Thursday for Iowa City campus.

University of Northern Iowa: there will be no classes on campus beginning 5 p.m., Tuesday through noon, Thursday. Furthermore. Wednesday, the UNI campus will be put on reduced operations; only essential personnel should report, with courses taught by eLearning proceeding as scheduled.

Iowa State University:

Canceling classes from 5 p.m. Tuesday through noon Thursday.

Kirkwood Community College: Closed from 5 p.m. until 10 a.m. Thursday.

Coe College: All Coe College classes will be canceled beginning 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, until 8 a.m. Thursday,

Cedar Rapids Community School District:

Canceled classes Tuesday and Wednesday

Iowa City Community School District:

two-hour delay Monday; classes have been canceled Tuesday through Thursday

Iowa Mennonite School:

canceled Monday

Linn-Mar School District:

Canceled classes and events Tuesday and Wednesday.

Marion School District:

Canceled classes and events Tuesday and Wednesday.

Solon School District:

No classes or activities Tuesday and Wednesday

Clear Creek Amana Schools announced there would be no school Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday with all buildings closed.

Mount Vernon and Lisbon School Districts also decided against school being open Tuesday and Wednesday.

Xavier Catholic School District closed Tuesday and Wednesday, with the cold preventing scheduled boys and girls basketball games and Tuesday mass and rosary.

Trash and recycling

Cedar Rapids:

Cedar Rapids Solid Waste & Recycling customers with Wednesday collection should place their carts out for collection by 7 a.m. on Tuesday this week, one day early. All collection types are impacted.

Coralville:

The City of Coralville will not pick up trash and recycling on Wednesday, January 30. Wednesday routes will be picked up on Thursday, and Thursday routes will be picked up Friday.

Other Cancellations of Note

' The Cedar Rapids Public Library will be open at 8 a.m. Tuesday (as well as Wednesday and Thursday) to provide a warm, safe space for those who need it. Warm beverages and lots of comfy seating are available to all. People are also invited to drop off non-perishable food items to be donated to the Wellington Heights Neighborhood Association for families in need during this extreme cold.

' DNR Air Quality Meeting and Trainings scheduled for Wednesday in Cedar Rapids and Thursday in Des Moines have been postponed due to weather.

' Sierra Club is canceling its Wednesday, Jan. 30 movie showing at the Fairfield Public Library due to inclement weather. The Saturday, Feb. 2 event still is scheduled to take place.

' Prairie Lights in Iowa City has announced the event on Jan. 30 at 7 p.m. for Andrew Yang has been canceled due to extreme weather. The event will be rescheduled at a later time.

' 1 Million Cups, set for Wednesday with Michelle Bates of Involta heading the Founder Fireside session, has been rescheduled for March 6.
