Clovis High School, not City High School: Viral threat of violence leads to concern in Iowa City

A 17-year-old male student was caught after making a threatening post on Snapchat featuring a photo of himself and a gun, and threatening text implying a school shooting.

That was in Clovis, New Mexico home of Clovis High School. and police confronted and charged that student last week. What happened next was because the threat he made was directed toward a 'CHS' not 'Clovis High School.'

As a result of this ambiguity, the post went viral on both Instagram and Snapchat, and several schools with the letters CHS were mistakenly put on high alert throughout the country.

This included members of City High School in Iowa City. According to the Iowa City Police, on Monday night the police received several reports of posts on social media that contained 'a threat aimed at what was believed to be City High School,' according to a media release. Police say they acted on these tips and investigated this further, leading them to discover that the posts had originated in Clovis, a fact that they later confirmed with the Clovis Police Department.

According to the release, Iowa City Police then confirmed that not only had the posts originated in Clovis, an arrest had been made in the incident, and the matter was determined to be resolved.
