Cedar Rapids sexual assault suspect still at large

Police are searching for a sexual assault suspect in connection with a southeast Cedar Rapids burglary from earlier this week.

Officials responded to a burglary in progress at 1639 First Avenue SE around 10:35 a.m. Tuesday. According to police, a male kicked in the door at the residence and sexually assaulted the 31-year-old female resident inside. Police have not confirmed whether the suspect had a weapon at the time, but the female did suffer minor cuts and was treated and released from St. Luke's Hospital, police said.

Police do not believe it was a random attack, but are still investigating. Nobody is in custody at this time.

“We're looking into it and trying to make a connection with, why that apartment and why her,” Sgt. Cristy Hamblin said. “It's just not adding up.”
