CEDAR RAPIDS - A Cedar Rapids man is facing charges after police arrested him Thursday evening in connection with an early Wednesday shooting in northeast Cedar Rapids that wounded two people, one of them seriously.
Ezekiel Cortez Phillips Jr., 30, was arrested on two counts each of attempted murder and willful injury, and one count of going armed with intent according to the criminal complaint.
The police department said officers were called to 1640 Miami Dr. NE at 3 a.m. Wednesday where a 19-year-old woman, identified in the criminal complaint as Mone Dotson, had fled, seeking help after being shot.
Police then found 27-year-old Tyrice Douglas at The Pointe apartment complex, 1643 Park Towne Ct. NE, suffering from multiple, life-threatening gunshot wounds. He was taken to a hospital, where his condition is unknown.
Police said an investigation led them to Phillips, who was taken into custody at Ninth Street and Eighth Avenue SW on Thursday evening during a traffic stop.
According to the criminal complaint, 'witnesses identified (Douglas) as the subject who entered the 1623 Park Towne Court NE (apartment) and fired a multitude of shots at both Mone Dotson and Tyrice Douglas.”
Both victims 'suffered several gunshot wounds,” the complaint states, 'and are still receiving treatment for serious injuries.”
Investigators do not believe the shooting was a random incident of violence, according to the release.
