CEDAR RAPIDS — Police arrested a Cedar Rapids man Tuesday on an attempted murder charge in connection with a home invasion Sunday in which a man was shot in the leg.
J. Reese Jones, 54, also faces charges of first-degree burglary, assault while displaying a dangerous weapon, felon in possession of a dangerous weapon and going armed with intent.
Jones will have an initial appearance in Linn County District Court on Wednesday and be charged after the case is reviewed by the Linn County Attorney’s Office.
Police responded to a report of a home invasion about 7:22 a.m. at 2624 30th St. SW on Sunday. Officers found Michael Woodward, 38, with a single gunshot wound to his leg. He was identified as a victim and was taken to a hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
Police would not say if Woodward lived in the residence.
After interviewing witnesses at the scene, investigators determined three people entered the house after the resident opened the door, police said. The suspects went to the basement and kicked in the door of a bedroom, where they found Woodard before he was shot. The suspects fled after the shooting and left the area before police arrived.
Jones is in the Linn County Jail without bail for the murder and burglary charges and a total of $12,000 for the other charges.
The investigation continues.
