Cedar Rapids ‘Butt Crack Bandit’ arrested, faces multiple charges

A Cedar Rapids man who was allegedly part of a break-in duo that became known as the 'Butt Crack Bandits” was arrested Tuesday morning and faces multiple charges.

According to the Cedar Rapids Police Department, Logan M. Toomer, 28, faces charges of third-degree burglary and first-degree criminal mischief in connection with a burglary between 1:45 and 2:30 a.m. on Christmas morning at Westdale Car Wash, 4115 Wilson Ave.

According to the criminal complaint, Toomer is one of two suspects identified on video from the carwash's surveillance system.

Police said Toomer and his accomplice forced their way into the business office and broke into coin machines. Police estimated damage at approximately $18,000.

The police department said Toomer was already being held at the Linn County Correction Center after police served him Friday with a warrant for probation revocation on charges of third-degree theft and operating a motor vehicle without the owner's consent. Toomer faces additional charges of third-degree burglary, possession of drug paraphernalia and interference of official acts.

Those charges, according to the complaint, stem from a Christmas Eve break in at A&M Auto, 3243 Epic Drive in Robins.

The complaint states Toomer was identified in that incident using video surveillance from a neighboring business that allegedly showed Toomer breaking into the building and stealing tools.

In both break-ins, surveillance video showed one of the suspects repeatedly adjusting his pants each time they slipped down, often revealing his back side, prompting a local TV station to dub the duo the 'Butt Crack Bandits.”

Public Safety Spokesperson Greg Buelow said police received 'a number of valuable tips through Linn County Crime Stoppers.”

'We appreciate the information that was shared that led to the identification of a suspect in the case,” he said. 'There still is an active investigation into another suspect.”
