WAVERLY, Iowa - William Clayton of Osage and Jeremiah Mumford of New Hampton could effectively spend the rest of their lives in prison if convicted on all counts leveled against them Thursday in Bremer County District Court.
The two men allegedly attempted to rob the Maynard Savings Bank a day earlier, shooting two officers and prompting a massive response by federal, state, county and local law enforcement agencies.
Mumford is charged with four counts of terrorism and six counts of attempted murder. Clayton is charged with four counts of terrorism and six counts of aiding and abetting attempted murder.
Each charge is a Class B felony. Terrorism is punishable by up to 25 years in prison. Attempted murder is punishable by up to 50 years in prison.
UPDATE: The Bremer County Attorney's Office asked for bond to be set at $1 million, cash only, for both men.
"We had two officers injured, one who is currently hospitalized," Assistant County Attorney Jill Dashner told Magistrate Karen Thalacker this morning.
Thalacker agreed and did set bond for Mumford and Clayton at the requested amount.
Law enforcement officials responded to Maynard about 11:15 a.m. Wednesday. In the process, Sumner Police Chief Dennis Cain and Trooper Mark Domino with the Iowa State Patrol came under fire.
Cain was shot in the neck, hand and thumb. He underwent surgery last night at Allen Hospital in Waterloo.
Hospital spokesman Jim Waterbury says Cain was shot through the neck with one bullet while a second went through his thumb and then through his shoulder.
Waterbury says Cain is responsive and his family feels good about his progress. He says Cain will be transferred to University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics later Wednesday for hand surgery.
Domino was shot through his right bicep. He was treated and released.
The manhunt for Mumford and Clayton took about seven hours. The two men were surrounded in an area covering about two square miles near Frederika but were apprehended shortly before 7 p.m.
