Authorities arrest man accused of shooting people during birthday party in Cedar Rapids

CEDAR RAPIDS — A man was arrested last week in connection with a shooting during a birthday party in October 2021 in a Cedar Rapids hotel.
Quonie Shelton, 30, is charged with five counts of willful injury, five counts of reckless use of a firearm, and one count each of using a dangerous weapon in the commission of a crime, going armed with intent and intimidation with a dangerous weapon.
Shelton is accused of shooting into the crowd at a birthday party at the Ramada by Wyndham hotel, 535 33rd Ave. SW, Cedar Rapids, on Oct. 1, 2021. Six people were injured, according to police statements shortly after the shooting.

Five people — Burrell Jackson, Kala Richardson, Calvin Cameron, Andre Banks, and an unidentified juvenile — were listed in criminal complaints as having been injured by Shelton. Cameron and Banks suffered injuries that led to a “prolonged, debilitating impairment to an extremity,” the criminal complaints state.
Shelton was arrested May 8 and is being held in the Linn County Jail on a $250,000 cash-only bond.
