CEDAR RAPIDS — A 40-year-old Alburnett man was arrested Tuesday in Cedar Rapids after a high-speed chase in a stolen vehicle.
Ryan Douglas O’Green faces multiple charges, including second- and third-degree theft, interference with official acts, attempting to elude and driving while barred.
Cedar Rapids police were called at 7 p.m. after the owner of 2016 Nissan Sentra reported it had just been stolen while parked at the Casey’s General Store at 235 Edgewood Rd. NW.
Police said the owner had left the keys in the vehicle’s ignition.
While the officer was taking the report, the officer and vehicle’s owner noticed the car being driven on Edgewood Road.
The officer pursued the stolen car through northwest Cedar Rapids into the city’s southwest quadrant, driving around several construction barriers and at times exceeding speeds of 75 mph.
In the 100 block of 18th Street SW, near Chandler Street NW, officers found the car, unoccupied, with its backup lights on as it rolled to a stop in a grassy area near the roadway.
Police said several witnesses pointed officers in the direction the driver — later identified as O’Green — had run.
Officers spotted O’Green running on First Avenue near 17th Street NW and eventually found him hiding in a garage in the 1600 block of Maple Drive NW.
Police said several pieces of the vehicle owner’s property were found in the garage and in O’Green’s possession.
