Armstrong's department store, at Third Street and Third Avenue SE in downtown Cedar Rapids, was in business for just over 100 years when it closed its doors in 1991. CEDAR RAPIDS – The History Center is sharing the last holiday display shown at Armstrong’s Department Store through a temporary exhibit available from Saturday through Dec. 30.
Armstrong employee Ron King, who helped bring the famous holiday displays to shoppers for 24 years, has rebuilt the display “Rudolph’s Retreat.” The community is invited for a first-look at the holiday display, “Rudolph’s Return,” on Saturday from 10 a.m. to noon. This family-friendly event includes photos with Santa, holiday llamas, crafts for kids, musical entertainment and cookies and cocoa.
Visitors also will have the opportunity to tour the museum and explore the full Armstrong exhibit, “Fashion and Philanthropy: The Armstrong Family.”
