Wayne Grell, Republican candidate for House District 85. (Submitted)
Wayne Grell, 62, of North Liberty, is the Republican candidate for House District 85 in the Nov. 8 general election. Grell, a former construction owner and past business owner, is seeking his first term in the statehouse.
The Gazette posed a set of questions to all area statehouse candidates. Below is the transcript of Grell’s answers. Polls will be open on election day from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.
What do you think are the three most important issues the state is facing? What would you do to address them?
Grell: Parents have the responsibility to know what their kids are being taught in schools. Keeping neighborhoods safe from criminals and illegal drugs by common sense enforcement of the rule of law. Fighting inflation by eliminating redundant and unnecessary state regulations.
Do you support the use of eminent domain for CO2 pipelines? Why or why not?
Grell: It's a necessary evil. Change laws to help land owners, receive 150 percent to 200 percent the property's assessed value in a more expedited manner.
What restrictions or limitations should be placed on the use of eminent domain for CO2 pipelines?
Grell: Answered in last question.
The state is projected to have a budget surplus of more than $1 billion. What would be your top priorities for that surplus?
Grell: I need further research. Too many important things.
What changes — beyond those made in recent sessions — would you like to see made to Iowa's tax code?
Grell: Make sure inheritance tax is fazed out and support flat tax.
Under what circumstances should Iowans be able to access abortion services in the state? What if any, exceptions should apply to any abortion bans?
Grell: In the event that carrying the baby to term will cause danger to the mother's health.
What are your ideas for improving public schools?
Grell: Greater improvement in communication to parents on what their children are doing and learning. (Weekly emails)
Do you support further use of state funds to help parents pay the costs of non-public schools or home schooling for grades K-12? Why or why not?
Grell: Yes with certain restrictions. The more competition, the better our schools will become.
Should Iowa ban the use of hand-held mobile devices while driving?
Grell: Yes, it’s unsafe.
Should automated traffic cameras be banned?
Grell: In some cases they're beneficial but I still feel that they're an infringement on our rights.
