The National Rifle Association has endorsed Republican Senate candidate Joni Ernst.
The NRA, in a statement Tuesday, cited her legislative record, as well as her opposition to universal background checks and national right to carry reciprocity.
'Joni Ernst has consistently opposed all attempts to restrict gun rights and has been a true friend of the Second Amendment,” said Chris W. Cox, chairman of the NRA's Political Victory Fund. 'She is one great example of NRA moms all across this country fighting for our freedoms. She's the only candidate in this race with a proven record of defending our rights.”
Ernst has won attention with a pair of provocative television ads, including her last one that shows the Red Oak Republican riding a motorcycle and using a handgun at a firing range, saying she would 'unload” on the Affordable Care Act.
Ernst has said that she often carries a gun with her and has done so at the state Capitol.
In a Twitter post Tuesday morning, Ernst said she is proud to have won the endorsement.
Ernst also announced Tuesday morning that she has received the endorsement of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce.
Ernst is in a close race for the Republican's Senate nomination. She and retired energy executive Mark Jacobs are running closely at the top of recent opinion polls.
Also in the race are former U.S. Attorney Matt Whitaker, college professor Sam Clovis and sales professional Scott Schaben.
The primary is June 3.
