CEDAR RAPIDS — Timothy Charles, former president and CEO of Mercy Medical Center in Cedar Rapids, will receive the 2022 Howard Hall Excellence in Business Award.
The award, the most prestigious honor bestowed by the Cedar Rapids Metro Economic Alliance, is given to a premier business leader or couple who exemplify the business values of Howard Hall and his passion for a vibrant Cedar Rapids, the alliance said in a news release.
Charles will receive the award and provide remarks during the economic alliance’s annual meeting Jan. 24 at the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Cedar Rapids Convention Complex in downtown Cedar Rapids.

“Tim Charles exemplifies the values we associate with Howard Hall, certainly in the way he has led his organization, but also in the way he has elevated community discussions in circles beyond the hospital,” said Doug Neumann, executive director of the Economic Alliance.
“He has been a tremendous asset to the MedQuarter and really to the entire community. His commitment, with his wife, Janice, to stay here in retirement and continue to drive thoughtful community conversations about health care, aging and development is impressive.”
Charles retired from Mercy Medical Center on Dec. 31 after 19 years with Mercy and 15 years as its president and CEO.
Charles led Mercy through significant expansion, including the Hall-Perrine Cancer Center and the under-construction Plumb Heart Center, as well as development of HallMar Village for seniors, including those living with dementia.
He also led Mercy through significant challenges, including the flood of 2008, the pandemic and the derecho.
The Howard Hall Excellence in Business Award is named for industrialist and philanthropist, Howard Hall (1894-1971), who founded Iowa Manufacturing Co. and used his influence to improve the Cedar Rapids community and economy, often working behind the scenes to attract new businesses and jobs.
The Cedar Rapids Metro Economic Alliance formed 11 years ago when the Cedar Rapids Chamber of Commerce, Priority One and the Cedar Rapids Downtown District combined forces to become one entity in January 2012.
