Jimmy 'Jaymz” Larson, a morning radio host with 94.1 KRNA in Cedar Rapids, is taking over Red's Public House downtown later this year with the intent to reinvent his favorite bar in town.
The bar at 112 Second St. SE will be renamed Jimmy Z's, with a target opening date of Dec. 3, depending on if Larson and his business partner can secure local and state licenses.
Larson said Red's was his favorite bar in Cedar Rapids, but the service declined over time. He was recently approached to see if he was interested in taking over the space.
'I didn't wake up one day wanting to open up a bar, but I saw my favorite bar not what it used to be,” he said.
It's not clear what led to Red's closing. A sign posted on the bar's door on Thursday said, 'For entry, please call landlord's attorney” along with a phone number, and the bar's Facebook page has been taken down. Calls to Bill Courter, whose office number is listed on the sign, were not returned Thursday or Friday. When reached by phone, a co-owner of the building declined to comment.
The bar was open since at least 2010.
Larson said Jimmy Z's will be themed around television and radio, alluding to his jobs in radio as the sideline reporter for the Cedar Rapids Roughriders and as a commentator for the Heartland Poker Tour television broadcasts.
He said the bar's layout will remain mostly the same, but crews will renovate the interiors for a brighter feel. He is also developing a menu emphasizing pizza and breakfast service.
Larson declined to say how much he is investing in the venture.
