CEDAR RAPIDS - A 41-year-old Cedar Rapids hotel no longer can use the Clarion name after employees complained they have not been paid.
A spokeswoman for Choice Hotels, which franchises out hotels under the Clarion name, said the company has conducted an internal review of the Clarion Hotel and Convention Center, 525 33rd Ave. SW. After that review, 'the hotel is being terminated from our system.”
The review and termination follow complaints from several Clarion employees that the hotel's management has had trouble paying them on time or at all. The hotel's owner has denied those claims.
'Termination from our system means the hotel no longer has the right to operate under the Clarion name and must immediately cease identifying itself as a Clarion Hotel,” the spokeswoman said in an email.
As of Thursday morning, it appeared the Cedar Rapids Clarion had been removed from an online listing of Choice Hotels.
The spokeswoman did not immediately respond when asked to elaborate on what prompted the review or what the company found.
The U.S. Department of Labor's Wage and Hour Division has started an investigation into the hotel.
Rockville, Md.-based Choice Hotels also owns the Comfort Inn, Comfort Suites, Sleep Inn and Quality Inn hotel brand names, among others.
