Iowa girls’ state basketball 2023: A closer look at Wednesday’s games

DES MOINES — Capsules for Wednesday's games involving area teams at the Iowa high school girls' state basketball tournament at Wells Fargo Arena.

Class 1A quarterfinals

No. 3 North Linn (22-1) vs. No. 8 Winfield-Mount Union (22-1)

Time: 6:45 p.m.

Top players: High-powered North Linn is led by Kamryn Kurt (5-6, sr.) at 17.0 points, 4.3 assists and 4.1 steals per game. Macy Boge (5-8, jr.) and Molly Boge (5-8, soph.) add 12.5 and 11.6 points per game, respectively. Brady Buffington (5-11, sr.) paces Winfield-Mount Union at 14.5 points and 8.3 rebounds per game; Melina Oepping (5-10, sr.) adds 12.5 points and 9.0 boards per contest.

Coaches: Brian Wheatley is in his 19th season at North Linn and owns a 370-88 record. His last 13 teams all have won 20-plus games. Mendy McCreight is in her debut season at WMU and owns a 22-1 record there; she is 66-49 overall.

Tournament history: North Linn is here for the ninth time, the eighth in the last 10 years, the fifth in a row. The Lynx were 2A champions in 2020. Winfield-Mount Union is making its ninth state trip, its first since four in a row from 1995 through 1998. The Wolves were 1A champs in 1995 and 1996.
