Monday’s state softball scores
CLASS 5A QUARTERFINALS
No. 1 Fort Dodge 12, No. 12 Waukee 0 (3 innings)
No. 6 West Des Moines Valley 7, No. 7 Southeast Polk 5
No. 3 Muscatine 4, No. 10 Pleasant Valley 0
No. 4 Waukee Northwest 4, No. 8 Linn-Mar 0
In the words of Lindsey Murray, the Linn-Mar Lions leaned too much on thought, too little on instinct.
“We were thinking too much at the plate,” she said. “We were guessing instead of seeing and hitting.”
Maddie Oetzmann yielded just four hits, none after the fourth inning, and fourth-ranked Waukee Northwest handed No. 8 Linn-Mar its first shutout loss of the season, 4-0, in a Class 5A quarterfinal at the state softball tournament Monday afternoon at the Rogers Sports Complex.
The Wolves (33-7), in their first year of operation, advance to the Wednesday’s semifinal round, where they will face No. 3 Muscatine (36-4), a 4-0 winner over Pleasant Valley.
“It’s just crazy, our first year together as a team,” Oetzmann said. “We’ve really adjusted and handled adversity.”
CLASS 4A QUARTERFINALS
No. 1 Winterset 10, Burlington 2
No. 5 Carlisle 8, No. 4 Norwalk 4
No. 8 North Scott 2, No. 2 Adel ADM 1
No. 3 Dallas Center-Grimes 9, No. 6 Indianola 3
CLASS 3A QUARTERFINALS
No. 1 Mount Vernon 3, Dubuque Wahlert 1
Eight seed? Eighth-graders?
The nucleus of Dubuque Wahlert’s softball team resembled neither.
“We talk about respecting all and fearing none,” Mount Vernon Coach Robin Brand said. “And that team ... we respect that team.”
A squad that won only two games a year ago, Wahlert played top-ranked Mount Vernon to a stalemate for four innings Monday night. But the Mustangs tallied on a pair of sacrifice flies in the fifth and topped the Golden Eagles, 3-1, in a Class 3A quarterfinal at the state softball tournament at the Rogers Sports Complex.
“We knew they weren’t going to roll over,” said Mount Vernon’s Nadia Telecky, who led off with a triple and scored twice as the Mustangs (34-4) advanced.
No. 6 Saydel 3, No. 10 Davis County 1
