CLASS 3A QUARTERFINALS
No. 1 Cedar Rapids Xavier 7, Adel ADM 2
Xavier scored five runs on two hits and three errors in the bottom of the sixth to stave off ADM's upset bid.
Nate Skala led off the inning with a walk to chase ADM starter Logan Crannell. Two straight batters then reached on an error for the go-ahead run and a Quinn Schulte grounder brought in another. Kyle Moeder doubled and Garrett Ries singled for RBIs and the Saints later scored again on a passed ball.
The Tigers put two on in the seventh, but Schulte snagged a liner and doubled off the runner at second, then Braden Albert struck out Jaxson Millsap to end it. Bryson Bastian got the win, allowing five hits and one earned run while striking out 10 in six innings.
The Tigers took a 2-1 lead in the third on an error and Tate Stine-Smith's RBI single, then Xavier tied it in the next half-inning when Moeder raced home from second after an errant pickoff attempt.
No. 4 Marion 4, Sioux City Heelan 0
Rick Atkins threw a complete-game shutout with 16 strikeouts to power Marion to an all-Metro semifinal game against Xavier.
Atkins allowed just three hits and struck out the final two Heelan batters to end the game.
The Indians scored right away with an RBI single from Trevor Paulsen and RBI triple from Owen Puk in the bottom of the first. Nick Cole added an RBI double in the third.
No. 3 DeWitt Central 11, No. 9 Centerville 1 (5 innings)
The Sabers piled up four runs in the fourth and five in the fifth to end the game via run rule, with Jacob Swanson's bases-clearing double the final blow against last year's Class 2A champion.
Garrett Finley also cleared the bases with a double in the fourth for DeWitt Central. Devin Hurdle was 2-for-2 with two RBIs and three runs scored.
Luxas Bixby allowed only three hits, one walk and a run while striking out six in five innings.
No. 2 Davenport Assumption 7, Boone 3
Boone took a brief 3-2 lead in the third when Spencer Turner cleared the bases with a three-RBI double, but the Knights recovered to advance.
Jeremy McIntosh scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the fourth, then Nick Gottilla doubled home Joe Manternach for the go-ahead run. Assumption added three runs in the fifth, with Jayson Willers and McIntosh earning RBI singles.
Gottilla also pitched four shutout innings of relief for the win, giving up just one hit and two walks and striking out five.
