CLASS 1A SEMIFINALS
No. 1 Mason City Newman 10, No. 6 Don Bosco 0 (5 innings)
Leadoff hitter Josh Fitzgerald was 4-for-4 with three extra-base hits, four runs and three RBIs to power the defending champion Knights back to the Class 1A title game.
Fitzgerald tripled in his first two at-bats, scoring on Merritt McCardle's single for the first run in the bottom of the first, driving in Doug Taylor in the second and scoring on Max Burt's double to make it 4-0. He singled and scored on a sac fly in the fourth and doubled home George Schmit and Taylor in the fifth. Jacob Schutt's bases-loaded walk that inning brought in Fitzgerald to end the game.
Evan Paulus got the win, allowing four hits and a walk while striking out five in five innings.
No. 3 Alburnett 4, No. 10 Remsen St. Mary's 3
Shane Neighbor executed a squeeze with the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh to score Austin Huber and send Alburnett to the 1A title game.
Huber led off the inning with a walk. Reed Stallman and Keaton Parker followed with back-to-back singles off reliever Kyler Waldschmitt after Blaine Harpenau reached the pitch count limit of 110. After a strikeout, Neighbor came through with the winning bunt.
Both teams scored three runs in the fifth. Parker's RBI single tied it. Neighbor struck out to end the inning with a runner on second. He got a second chance in the seventh and delivered.
Parker scattered six hits, a walk and three earned runs over seven innings for the win. He struck out four.
CLASS 2A SEMIFINALS
No. 5 Van Meter 3, West Sioux 0
Zach Pleggenkuhle struck out 17 batters, including a stretch of 13 straight, while giving up just two hits and a walk in a complete-game shutout.
Pleggenkuhle sat down the last two batters of the first inning, the first two batters of the fifth and everyone in between.
Cody Coffman's sac fly put the Bulldogs up 1-0 in the second, Brett Berg's RBI single made it 2-0 in the third and Jacob Blomgren brought home the final run with a single in the sixth. Berg was 2-for-3 and scored twice.
No. 2 North Linn 3, Des Moines Christian 0
Jake Hilmer pitched a complete-game one-hitter with 12 strikeouts to send the Lynx to the 2A title game.
Des Moines Christian's Kole Bradley nearly matched him, but North Linn broke through with three runs against Lions relievers in the fifth. Hilmer singled to lead off and got to third on an error. Austin Hilmer drew a walk and stole second and Trevor Boge was intentionally walked to load the bases. The next batter, David Seber, came through with a two-RBI single for the decisive runs. Alex Sturbaum added an RBI single.
