Iowa high school softball 2023: Gazette area players to watch

Addison Gookin led Mount Vernon to the Class 3A title last year, and pitcher Ashley Webb joins reigning 2A champion Iowa City Regina

Seventeen area players to watch for the 2023 softball season. Stats and all-state honors (from the Iowa Girls Coaches Association) are from last year.

Ryleigh Allgood, sr., Lisbon — Compiled a 26-4 pitching record with a 0.77 ERA. Struck out 222 and walked 42 in 182 2/3 innings. Batted .324 with 31 RBIs. Class 1A first-team all-state.

Jordyn Beck, sr., Linn-Mar — Compiled an 18-4 pitching record with a 1.09 ERA; 136 strikeouts and 28 walks in 119 1/3 innings. Batted .300. Class 5A first-team all-state.

Duanna Coyle, sr., Cedar Rapids Xavier — Batted .416 with 14 doubles and four home runs. Scored 23 runs and drove in 31. Compiled a 3-2 pitching record with a 1.52 ERA. Struck out 42 batters and walked 12 in 32 1/3 innings. Class 4A first-team all-state.

Kennedy Daugherty, sr., Iowa City Liberty — Compiled a 12-7 pitching record with a 2.54 ERA. Struck out 90 batters and walked 52 in 129 2/3 innings. Batted .314 with 15 doubles and nine home runs. Scored 34 runs and drove in 41. Class 5A second-team all-state.

Jessa DeMoss, jr., Benton Community — Compiled a 12-10 pitching record with a 3.61 ERA. Struck out 117 and walked 83 in 139 2/3 innings. Batted .426 with 13 doubles and eight home runs. Drove in 43 runs. Class 4A second-team all-state.

Peyton Driscoll, sr., Williamsburg — Compiled a 19-5 pitching record with a 1.91 ERA. Struck out 200 and walked 44 in 168 1/3 innings. Batted .257. Class 3A first-team all-state.

Shannon Finn, jr., Williamsburg — Batted .462 with 43 runs. Stole 36 bases in 42 attempts. Class 3A first-team all-state.

Michaela Goad, jr., Marion — Batted .445 with 11 doubles and 10 home runs last year. Scored 43 runs and drove in 43. Class 4A second-team all-state.

Addison Gookin, jr., Mount Vernon — Batted .500 with 13 doubles, six triples and seven home runs. Scored 38 runs and drove in 42. Stole 20 bases in 20 attempts. Compiled a 9-2 pitching record. Class 3A first-team all-state.

Pearson Hall, soph., West Liberty — Batted .546 with nine doubles, six triples and four home runs. Scored 39 runs and drove in 22. Stole 22 bases in 23 tries. Class 3A first-team all-state.

Lianna Hull, soph., Iowa City High — Batted .536 and scored 56 runs. Stole 31 bases in 32 attempts. Class 5A second-team all-state.

Peyton Johnson, sr., Marion — Batted .444 with 17 doubles and 11 home runs. Scored 36 runs and drove in 34. Class 4A first-team all-state.

Mischa Reiners, jr., Iowa City Liberty — Batted .418 with 14 doubles and five home runs. Scored 45 runs and drove in 30. Class 5A first-team all-state.

Peyton Robinson, sr., Lisbon — Batted .511 with 13 doubles and four home runs. Scored 64 runs and drove in 36. Stole 33 bases in 34 tries. Class 1A first-team all-state.

Devin Simon, sr., Cascade — Batted .500 with nine triples and nine home runs. Scored 48 runs and drove in 32. Stole 39 bases without getting caught. Compiled a 3-1 pitching record. Class 2A first-team all-state.

Ashley Webb, sr., Iowa City Regina — Compiled a 14-5 pitching record with a 1.33 ERA at Clear Creek Amana. Struck out 156 and walked 36 in 137 1/3 innings. Batted .246. Class 4A second-team all-state.
