John’s Grocery at 401 E. Market St. in Iowa City closed its kitchen at the end of last week after decades of service at the family-owned corner store, according to Little Village. This change means the end of their fried chicken that has been a local favorite.
Little Village reported that John’s will be shifting its focus to expand in other areas like online shopping, according to Doug Alberhasky, the store’s manager. Alberhasky told the magazine that the store’s kitchen would need to be completely renovated to continue using it, and city regulations would require major and expensive additions such as a fire suppression system.
