CEDAR RAPIDS — In a way, Ava Locklear was too good for her own benefit.
A junior at Clear Creek Amana, Locklear probably could have posted the first triple-double in Rivalry Saturday history. But because of the lopsided personality of the game, she sat out the final 10 minutes.
As it was, Locklear finished with 16 points, nine rebounds and nine assists as Class 4A eighth-ranked CCA handled Williamsburg, 59-26, in a Wamac Conference West Division encounter Saturday afternoon at Johnson Hall.

“I usually don’t get the assists like that,” Locklear said. “I thought we all shared the ball well.”
They sure did. The Clippers (1-0 overall, 1-0 division) distributed 20 assists and served notice to the Wamac West that they’ll be a force.
“Williamsburg cost us two titles (conference and division) last year when they beat us here,” CCA Coach P.J. Sweeney said. “We sure didn’t want to stub our toe again here today.”
Instead, the Clippers scored the game’s first 11 points (eight by Locklear), then assembled a 19-0 first-half blitz on the way to a 37-9 halftime lead.
The entire fourth quarter was played under the continuous clock.
Clear Creek Amana has size, and that size is mobile. Junior Bliss Beck (a Drake University volleyball recruit) scored 14 points on 7-of-9 shooting. And Locklear proved Saturday that she can serve as facilitator as well as post.
“They both move extremely well, and they can guard 1 through 5,” Sweeney said. “This was a good start for us. I like where we’re at.”
Freshman Averie Lower gives the Clippers another weapon. She hit 5 of 7 shots in a 13-point varsity debut.
Makenna Hughes paced Williamsburg (0-2, 0-1) with 11 points.
