UPDATE: Police were hoping to talk more today with a man who was shot Thursday morning in southeast Cedar Rapids.
Mario D. Gibson, 30, of Cedar Rapids, was shot in the back just before 11:30 a.m. Thursday in the 1400 block of Seventh Ave. SE, authorities said. Police said his injuries were not considered life-threatening.
Witnesses told SourceMedia Group about a dozen shots were fired. At least six bullets struck Gibson's sport-utility vehicle, which was parked on the street. The gunfire also caused damage to three or four houses, according to reports that were still coming in Thursday night.
Sgt. Cristy Hamblin said Gibson was standing next to the SUV when the shooting began and tried to take cover inside the SUV. At some point he ran from the vehicle. Officers located him a couple blocks away, in the 1500 block of Fifth Avenue SE, with at least one gunshot wound.
Gibson was taken to Mercy Medical Center for treatment of his injuries. Information about his medical condition was not being released, according to a hospital spokesman.
No arrests have been made in the case. Police have not released any details about a possible description of the shooter. Hamblin said no information has come in to suggest that the shooter was using a vehicle.
