A West Liberty man is accused of assault on peace officers, interference with official acts and intoxication after police say he became combative with them after a car accident Sunday.
A report from the Iowa City police department said officers were dispatched to the seen of an accident in the 10 block of York Place at 1:38 p.m., where witnesses said they saw 32-year-old Rick Butler get out of the car he was driving, grab a 12-pack of beer from the car and walk away.
When police located Butler, the report said he had red, bloodshot watery eyes and smelled of alcohol.
Reports said Butler was uncooperative with police, and fought with them when he was being taken into custody. When he continued to be combative, police tased him, the complaint said.
The report said Butler continued to fight and had to be tased a second time. When he was placed in handcuffs, police said Butler roundhouse kicked an officer in the leg, after which he was tased a third time.
According to police reports, Butler declined a preliminary breath test. He was also charged with littering and possession of an open container in public, according to arrest records.
