A Coralville man is accused of domestic abuse assault without intent causing injury and child endangerment without injury after authorities say a woman claimed that he had tried to strangle her in front of their children.
Reports indicate that officers were dispatched to an Iowa City apartment after receiving word of an assault at 6:36 a.m. Sept.3. Upon arrival, officers found a woman at the scene who was crying hysterically.
The woman told officers that Edin "Eddie" Herrera, 29, of 201 Iowa Lodge, had allegedly strangled her during an argument and slapped her after she had taken his hands away from her throat, police said.
Authorities say that three children, ages 4, 5 and 7, were present during the alleged assault. Herrera is the father of two of the children. The woman had swelling and redness on the left side of her face and complained of neck pain after the alleged incident.
The children said they were scared and repeatedly requested that they and their mother be taken away from the residence by officers, police said.
Herrera was being held at the Johnson County Jail Tuesday, waiting to appear before a judge.
Domestic abuse assault without intent causing injury is a serious misdemeanor and child endangerment without injury is an aggravated misdemeanor.
