Waterloo fire intentionally set

An early-morning fire Monday destroyed a flood-damaged Waterloo house slated for demolition at 180 Sans Souci Dr.

The house was one of many that were damaged by flood waters in 2008. The City of Waterloo had just hired a contractor to tear it down.

Firefighters were called to the island around 3:44 a.m. Monday. No utilities are hooked up to the home. The home was fully engulfed and slated for demolition, so firefighters let it burn and prevented the flames from spreading.

The parts of the house that weren't destroyed collapsed into the basement, making it nearly impossible to determine how it was started.
