Commercial airline flights across the country were grounded after the attacks, as the nation's aviation system was completely shut down for the first time.
The Eastern Iowa Airport, which averaged 84 flights a day at the time, had lost operating revenue of $63,350 over the five days after the attacks.
Amtrak and Greyhound reported higher usage, however, as stranded travelers sought alternative ways to get home. Some local hotels were booked solid in that first week, too, as those travelers worked their way home.
