CORALVILLE - A gold coin valued at almost $200 has been dropped into one of the Salvation Army's red kettles in Coralville.
Lia Pontarelli of the Johnson County Salvation Army said the coin was anonymously deposited into a kettle last Monday, the first day of collections.
The dime-sized coin wasn't discovered until the next day, when volunteers at a local bank were counting the donations. It's valued at $172 but will be sold to a coin shop for $210.
This is the fourth straight year that a gold coin has been dropped into a Johnson County kettle.
