Buckthorpe, Lorraine (Hines)
Lorraine (Hines) Buckthorpe, of Little Rock, Ark., formerly of Cedar Rapids, passed away April 4, 2010, after a valiant yearlong battle with cancer. Memorial services to celebrate her life will be held at 6 p.m. Saturday, May 29, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Marion.
Lorraine is survived by her four daughters, Debbie and Rick Laue of Marion, Mary and Steve Zamastil of Davis Junction, Ill., Lori Hofmann of Sandusky, Ohio, and Kathy and Steve Long of Cedar Rapids; one son, Bill Hines of Vinton; her husband, Tom Buckthorpe of Little Rock, Ark.; her brother, Jack and Jean Hofer of New Hope, Minn.; 13 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Albert and Vivian Hofer; a brother, Norman Hofer; a granddaughter, Jillian Zamastil; and ex-husband, Mike Hines.
Alyce Lorraine Hofer was born March 26, 1930, in Bridgewater, S.D., to Albert and Vivian Hofer. She attended Bridgewater High School, graduating in 1948, and went on to Briar Cliff College in Sioux City, Iowa, for two years. On June 23, 1951, she married Mike Hines in Sioux City. They later divorced.
While in Cedar Rapids, she was involved in Welcome Wagon, bowling leagues, Ellis and Jones Park women's golf league, bridge clubs and she was very active in Camp Fire Girls with her four daughters. She was a member of the American Business Women's Business Association.
Lorraine spent most of her working years in retail with the exception of being restaurant assistant manager at the Holiday Inn in Cedar Rapids. She also sold Avon for many years.
In 1977, Lorraine opened her own gift shop called Hodge Podge Gifts. She had the store six years.
In December 1987, she married Tom Buckthorpe and moved to Little Rock, where she participated in many craft shows and held painting classes in her home. She was president of the Little Rock Homemakers Association.
Lorraine was very talented. She was a wonderful artist. She did ceramics, wood crafting, crocheting, upholstery and she was an excellent seamstress. Lorraine loved decorating her home and she was not afraid to tackle any home improvement job big or small.
What she enjoyed most was spending time with family and friends. On any given summer night you might find her out with her children playing kick the can, starlight star bright or fishing with her son at Robbins Lake. She loved to gather around the kitchen table to play cards, Yahtzee, Farkle, Upwords and her favorite, Scrabble. She knew every one- or two- letter word there was. She loved having family together telling stories and laughing. She was greatly loved by family and friends and she leaves an irreplaceable mark on all the hearts she touched.
Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society in her name.
