FEMA testing emergency alert system nationwide today

Emergency alerts will broadcast in Eastern Iowa and across the country today. But it'll only be a test.
At 1 p.m. today, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) will hold the first nationwide test of the Emergency Alert System.
The test alerts will run on TV and radios nationwide. They'll last about 30 seconds, and resemble the monthly civil defense tests that have been run for years. However, the test won't include outdoor warning sirens.
The EAS has been in place for 15 years, but this will be the first nationwide check of its effectiveness and reliability, officials say.
